About the Award
The Silver Crescent for Manufacturing Excellence Award resembles the Crescent Moon. The use of the crescent as a symbol of our state dates back to the 1700s, when it was worn on the caps of South Carolina’s revolutionary soldiers. Etched on the award is our state’s official tree—the Palmetto. This tree symbolizes the defeat of the British fleet at the Fort on Sullivan’s Island, which was built with palmetto logs. On the award, these two historic state symbols have as their foundation a cogged gear, representing the solid foundation that manufacturing provides for the economy of South Carolina.
