 Countdown to the Salute!

The Salute to Manufacturing is just four weeks away - scheduled for Tuesday, September 22 at noon at the Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology (SIMT) in Florence.  Dr. Thomas Kurfess, BMW Endowed Chair of Manufacturing at Clemson University will be the keynote speaker for this year's event.

More than 21 companies competed for the chance to be recognized as the Silver Crescent Manufacturer of the Year, and the top three will be honored at the annual awards luncheon being hosted by the SC Chamber of Commerce and the Silver Crescent Foundation.

In addition to the awards luncheon, attendees are invited to tour the wonderful SIMT facility, located adjacent to Florence-Darlington Technical College's main campus. Guided tours are available at 10 am and 1:30 pm, and individuals interested in touring this unique state-of-the-art manufacturing laboratory may register by clicking here.

There are still table sponsorships available and individual admission for the luncheon is $60. For more information or to register online visit www.silvercrescentsc.org/salute.asp.

2010 Discover Manufacturing Design Challenge Kicks Off

The Silver Crescent Foundation is kicking off its ninth annual student design competition this fall, and this year's challenge has a few new wrinkles designed to enhance the career exploration learning experience for students.

"This year we have added a theme and an essay component to the drawing portion of the competition," explained SCF President Karen Owens. "Manufacturing Starts with an Idea - What's Yours? will encourage students to go beyond simply recognizing the manufacturers operating in their local communities. We hope they will identify a product or idea that is needed, do some research of that need, and come up with a creative strategy for a product that could make the world a better place."

In addition, SCF will help teachers coordinate presentations by representatives from local manufacturers to help students better understand what goes on in a manufacturing facility. "By scheduling these classroom discussions about today's advanced manufacturing, we hope to contribute to the students' extended learning opportunities," Owens added.
