 Manufacturing's Support of Workforce Development

New to this year’s Salute to Manufacturing was an educational workshop focusing on Manufacturing’s Support of Education and Future Workforce Development. Approximately 40 business owners, manufacturing representatives and education leaders participated in the forum which focused on various efforts to get more young people excited about working in the manufacturing sector. Among the presenters were Dr. Bob Couch who provided an update on the Personal Pathways to Success™ initiative; Jordy Johnson and Ann Brown of Microburst Learning who demonstrated their highly-interactive Virtual Job Shadows that SC students can access online to learn about various careers; and Monica Key of Bridgestone Firestone of SC who shared success stories of programs used in Aiken to expose more students and teachers to manufacturing careers. The session leaders reinforced the importance of being actively involved in future workforce efforts and encouraged attendees to get engaged in these activities in their own communities.

Dr. Couch's presentation is available to download (divided into parts due to size of presentation:

 Camp Success 2011 Needs You!

The final report for the past 3 years of Camp Success is now complete and we are pleased to report a successful year of hosting 96 campers in Aiken, Florence, Greenville, and Seneca.  Over the past 3 years with the use of federal funding and industry donations we have hosted 275 campers in Anderson, Cheraw, Greenwood, Pendleton as well as the above listed locations.  We particularly want to thank all of the staff and faculty at each of the camp locations as well as all of the industry support we received from local manufacturers.

It is now time to begin planning next year's sessions of Camp Success however without federal funding, we need your help.  We are particularly in need of manufacturing support both financially and with Discovery Workshops and facility tours.  Help us to engage tomorrow's workforce in a career in the advanced manufacturing fields the manufacturing industry needs.

 2011 Discover Manufacturing Design Challenge

The Design Challenge competition is designed to engage students to learn about the benefits of manufacturing in their community/region and the state. Advanced manufacturing requires people proficient in math, science, with good problem solving skills, and tech-savvy know-how to use sophisticated equipment. So, it is our hope that participation in the Design Challenge will help motivate students to succeed in school by providing a learning experience that has real world applications.

Students who participate in the Design Challenge must research manufacturing, write a short essay and design an advertisement (a billboard or magazine ad) for a manufacturing product.

Scholarships will be awarded for the top essay and advertising design in two categories: Middle School and High School. In each category $300 will be awarded to the first place essay/design, $200 to the second place essay/design, and $100 to the third place essay/design. Additionally, the school department that produces the first-place winner in each category is awarded $200.

Note: All students in all departments are encouraged to participate. Awards will be made in the spring of 2011 at each of the winners' schools.  Download the 2011 Design Challenge Flyer and the 2011 Design Challenge Rubric.  Regional calendar page sponsorships are available.  Visit the Discover Manufacturing Design Challenge webpage for more information and to view last year's winning designs and essays.
